Great oliver +s shorts! Just in time for spring break!
These oliver + s sketchbook shorts are the easiest and best-looking shorts pattern ever to make for the boys in your life!
Aside from PJ bottoms, I have a hard time finding cool things to make for my son. He is 10 and is very particular about how he dresses. So much so, that I was unsure whether or not to make him dress shorts with an elastic waist. But he loves them!
These turned out to be the perfect shorts for us to take on spring break for several reasons. (Reasons beyond the fact that they have pockets for collecting seashells!)
First, they are super comfy! I made the size 12 for Christopher because that’s what size he’s been wearing in store-bought clothes. They worked out perfectly. They are ever so slightly on the baggy side in the leg, but not big enough to be sloppy. So they work well for casual comfort as well as dress if you make them out of nicer fabric. They also have the nice detail of a faux fly with button on the front that also make them dressier than just plain pull-ons. It was totally lost on this fabric, but would look terrific made up in a plain twill.
Next, this great dark patchwork Madras plaid fabric hides spills and dirt so you can get multiple wears from them with no problem, making them perfect for travel! Another plus for travel is that they literally go with any solid shirts they happen to throw in their suitcase. (We also carry this in light patchwork Madras plaid which features more pinks.)
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, they are super easy and quick to make. And we all know how tight we are on time just before a trip, so this becomes critical. There are five pattern pieces: front, back, pocket, pocket lining and waist band. To make things even faster (and because I am a speed sewer) I serged the seams. It literally took me an hour to make these.
One consistently nice thing about oliver + s patterns is that they are so simple to make that even a beginner can have as much success as an experienced sewer.
This pattern is a keeper!
I think I’ll keep the cute boy too! <3
