Silk crepe de chine is a versatile favourite, with a soft handle and a natural lustre. Its surface has a hint of matte roughness, making it one of the easiest silks to sew – luxe yet laidback, it’s perfect for daytime designs as well as eveningwear.
Strongly influenced by Vita Sackville-West’s White Garden, this design features a flourishing repeat of forget-me-nots, primroses, petunias and dahlias. The design flouts floral convention with its rich, dark grounds and colourless centres. Crepe de chine is one of the best silk bases for daytime wear – it’s effortlessly luxe, with a lightweight drape that’s made more durable by its matte, slightly rough surface. Try using crepe de chine to create a louche effect with wide-leg trousers and loosely tailored shirts, or with fluted sleeves and ruffled accents for a romantic feel.
